Johnson 'flat had the best car' Saturday night in Late Model Stock Car
action at South Boston Speedway SOUTH
BOSTON, VA. — Eddie Johnson didn't need any luck Saturday night at South
Boston Speedway. Earlier
this season, Johnson, who resides in Midlothian, Va. collected his first
Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division win of the campaign after he
surged to first place from the fourth position when the lead three cars on
the track got tangled in an accident. Saturday
night, Johnson posted his second win of the season at the four-tenths mile
asphalt oval, but he didn't need any assistance. After qualifying fourth,
Johnson battled to the front by the 105th circuit and pulled
away to collect the win in the featured attraction of the SunTrust 150
presented by GCR NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series race program. "I
got a little lucky in that first win here," Johnson said after the
race. "But tonight, I flat had the best car here." Wayne
Ramsey of Amherst, Va. placed second, exactly where he started the event.
Ramsey, however, slipped back to third in the early stages of the race
before battling into the runner-up slot on lap 137. Owen
Miller of Emporia, Va. garnered a third-place finish in the race and
pulled to within eight points of division points leader Drew Herring of
Benson, N.C. with one race remaining in the title chase this season at
South Boston Speedway. Herring
qualified ninth in the field and wound up posting an eighth-place finish.
When the night began, Herring owned an 18-point lead over a second-place
tie between Miller and Cash. Rodney
Cook of Reidsville, N.C. started eighth in the race, but rallied for a
fourth-place finish, while Jon Denning of Springfield, N.J. rounded out
the top five finishers in the event. Nick
Smith of Hampton, Va. was sixth at the checkered flag, while pole position
winner David Triplett, Jr. of Timberlake, N.C. was seventh. Cliff Daniels
of Smithfield, Va. placed ninth, just behind Herring. Daniels was the
final driver on the lead lap. Cash
rounded out the top 10 competitors in the race and was one lap down at the
close of the race. The
race was slowed by two cautions, the first of which came out on lap 119
when Jonathan Bailey of Keysville, Va. went spinning in the backstretch. The
second caution flag flew on lap 137 when Adam Barker of Hurt, Va. went
spinning in turn four after battling Ramsey for second place. Earlier,
Barker led the race from lap nine through the 104th circuit. Danny
Willis, Jr. scores 2nd Limited Sportsman victory; Anderson
unofficially locks up points championship Danny
Willis, Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. started on the outside of the front
row, grabbed the lead for good on the fourth circuit and held on the rest
of the way to secure his second Strutmasters.com Limited Sportsman
Division triumph of the season. Willis
battled side-by-side through the first three laps of the race with pole
sitter Charles Barnes of Chase City, Va., who wound up second in the
50-lap race, which was slowed by just two caution periods. Despite
wrecking his car during qualifying time trials and being involved in both
caution incidents on the track, Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va.
motored to a sixth-place finish to unofficially lock up the division's
points crown. Timmy
Langford of Amelia, Va. started sixth in the event, but motored to a
third-place run and was followed by Tommy Peregoy of Red Oak, Va. in the
fourth position. Tiffany Daniels of Smithfield, Va. secured a fifth-place
performance and was the final driver on the lead lap. Chuck
Watkins scores fourth Pure Stock win of season to unofficially claim
division points championship Chuck
Watkins of Stem, N.C. motored to his fourth Budweiser Pure Stock Division
victory of the season in 30-lap racing action Saturday night and
unofficially locked up a points championship in the process. Watkins
qualified third in the 13-car field, but started sixth after the top eight
drivers in time trials were inverted for the race. Watkins motored to the
front in the final 10 laps of the race, which was slowed by two caution
periods. Mark
Francisco of Halifax, Va. led a portion of the race, but settled for a
second-place finish at the end, while Lee Anderson of Gladys, Va. placed
third. Anderson also led a portion of the race in the early stages. Justin
Tucker of Elon, N.C. finished fourth in the field and was followed in the
top five by William Ridgeway of Burlington, N.C. Corey
Lajoie scores win in Pro Challenge Series; Mathis
finishes third to claim points championship Corey
Lajoie earned the pole position prior to the 51-lap race for the
competitors in the touring Aaron's Pro Challenge Series and led every lap
to secure a victory. Terry
Mathis finished third in the 11-car field and locked up the season-long
title chase for the series. The title was the third consecutive for Mathis
in the series. John
Stancill motored to a second-place finish just ahead of the series
champion, while Kenny Forbes, who started eighth in the field, rounded out
