Patience Rewarded For Gill At Farmers Foods 250
Veteran Hooters ProCup driver Bobby Gill knows something about patience, and it came in handy Saturday night, Gill inheriting the lead from Derek Kale shortly before the halfway point and holding off defending ProCup Series champion Clay Rogers in a green-white-checkers finish in the Farmers Foods 250 at South Boston Speedway.
The ProCup North Division opener for 2007 was punctuated by nine cautions and two rain delays, the race lasting almost three hours before Gill took the checkers ahead of Rogers and Matt Carter.
Former South Boston Speedway track champion Frank Deiny Jr. qualified on the pole with a track record time of 15.619 seconds and finished fourth in unofficial results, ahead of veteran Gary St. Amant.
Carl Long finished sixth, followed by A.J.Frank, Jody Lavender, Woody Howard and Jeff Fultz.
Saturday’s win was the 43rd of Gill’s ProCup career and his first at South Boston since 2002.
The night’s second race, a 110-lap Late Model Stock Car event, was cancelled due to rain, with no make-up date announced.
Racing returns to South Boston Speedway April 21 for the Craftsman 150, featuring a 150-lap race for the Late Model Stock Car Division, along with races for the Limited Sportsman, Pure Stock, Legends and Southern Virginia Modifieds.
