Barker Extends Win Streak To Seven

SOUTH BOSTON, VA….South Boston Speedway officials threw down a $1,000 bounty for any  driver that could snap Adam Barker’s streak of six straight wins here at the famed .4-mile oval.  A handful of the region’s top NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Division drivers came to take the challenge. None could knock Barker off of his game.  Last year’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion, Philip Morris of Ruckersville, Va, Deac McCaskill of Raleigh, N.C., Jerame Donley of Winston-Salem, N.C., and South Boston, Va. driver Stacy Puryear, a former competitor on the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series circuit, took their shot and failed to bump Barker out of the winner’s circle.

South Boston Speedway’s regulars including Wayne Ramsey of Amherst, Va., C.E. Falk of Virginia Beach, Va., Eddie Johnson of Midlothian, Va. couldn’t do it either.  Barker, from Hurt, Va. won the 150-lap race for the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division that highlighted Saturday night’s Allstate 150 presented by Little Caesar’s racing program.

Owen Miller of Emporia, Va. finished 1.246 seconds behind Barker in second place, with David Triplett Jr. of Timberlake, N.C. Greg Edwards of Poquoson, Va. and NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national points leader Rodney Cook of Reidsville, N.C. rounding out the top five finishers.

Jerame Donley of Winston-Salem, N.C., Eddie Johnson of Midlothian, Va., C.E. Falk III of Virginia Beach, Va., Stacy Puryear of South Boston, Va. and Jason Dickerson of Ruckersville, Va. completed the top ten finishers.

Miller, in what was his best outing of the season, got past Morris on the fourth lap to take second place but wasn’t able to mount a serious bid against Barker at the end. He found himself having to fend off a bid from Triplett in the late stages of the race, opening the door for Barker to cruise to victory.

Morris’ bid literally went up in smoke as the engine in his Chevrolet blew on lap 79 and sent him spinning into the wall in the second turn to bring out the second and final caution of the race. After seven laps of running under the caution flag, NASCAR officials red-flagged the race for about 15 minutes in order to clean up the oil and debris from Morris’s mishap.

The race resumed on lap 86 and went back to green flag racing on lap 96. McCaskill, who was in sixth place on the restart, fell off of the pace three laps later and went to the sidelines with mechanical problems.

Ramsey, who had been one of Barker’s biggest challengers all season, encountered mechanical problems and went to the pits on lap 122. He finished 18^th.  With no cautions to interrupt his momentum over the final 54 laps, Barker sped away to victory as Miller fended off a late bid from Triplett.

Barker, who led all but the first lap of the race, averaged 68.282 mph.

Anderson Wins Limited Sportsman Race

Defending Limited Sportsman Division champion Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va. picked up his sixth win in his eight starts with his victory in the 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division race.

Anderson, who led from start to finish, finished with a 4.288-second margin over second-place finisher Brian Pembleton of Amelia, Va. Danny Willis Jr, of Cluster Springs, Va., Timmy Langford of Amelia, Va. and Terri Marks of Capron, Va., driving a Chevrolet maintained by the students and instructors of the Halifax County Motorsports Academy, rounded out the top five finishers.  Anderson averaged 72.991 mph in the race that was slowed by only one caution period.

Throckmorton Sweeps Pure Stock Twinbill

Joey Throckmorton of Scottsburg, Va. had his best night of the season, sweeping the pair of 30-lap races for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.

In the opener, Throckmorton started sixth, raced into the lead on the fifth lap and held on the rest of the way to nail down his first win of the season.

Jarrett Milam of Ringgold, Va., who had won the last three races in the division, finished second with Quain Moore of Callands, Va. and defending division champion and current points leader, Chuck Watkins of Stem, N.C. and Chris Seay of Ringgold, Va. rounding out the top five finishers.

Throckmorton started eighth in the nightcap after having to draw for an inverted start following his win in the first race, got as high as third, and then spun on lap 19.

Having to restart the race at the rear of the field in 13^th place, Throckmorton was able to take advantage of a couple of situations one being a mishap involving the second-place, third-place and fifth-place cars, to get back to the front of the field.

He was fourth when the race was restarted following that mishap on the 20^th lap and took the lead from Mark Francisco of Halifax, Va. with four laps to go.  Throckmorton went on to edge Francisco, Watkins, Moore and Keith Langston of Pittsboro, N.C. who completed the top five.

Dowdy Wins Grand Stock Race

Troy Dowdy of Rustburg, Va. led from start to finish and won the 30-lap race for the Grand Stock Diovision.

Ray Ellington, Jr. of Madison Heights, Va. and Scott Hall of Yanceyville, N.C. rounded out the top three finishers.

Gomez Wins INEX Legends Cars Series Race

Billy Gomez of Fayetteville, N.C. won the 25-lap INEX Legends Cars Series. Chris Buscher of Prosper, Tex. and Sparky West of Hampton, Va. rounded out the top three finishers.

Next Race At South Boston Speedway

NASCAR racing action will return to South Boston Speedway on Saturday night, June 23 with the Whelen 150 Presented by Charles Anderson Lawn Care. A 150-lap race for the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division will highlight the night’s action. Also on the schedule are twin races for the Limited Sportsman Division and races for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and the Southern Vintage Modifieds.

Gates will open at 5 p.m., qualifying starts at 5:15 p.m. and the first race will start at 7 p.m.

South Boston Speedway will continue its Early Bird Special with admission being $8 for adults up until 6:30 p.m. and $10 after that. Youths ages 10-15 will be admitted for $5. Kids ages 9 and under will be admitted free with a paid adult.
