Wins South Boston Sheetz Limited Sportsman Headliner; Waltrip Takes Coors
Light All Star Race
South
Boston, Va. (April 12, 2003)—
NASCAR Winston Cup star Michael Waltrip visited Victory Lane to kick off
the Coors Light NASCAR All Star presented by WYYD at Big Daddy’s South
Boston Speedway April 12. Waltrip battled Jamie McMurray and Kenny
Wallace for the win, while Coors Light driver, Sterling Marlin experienced
mechanical problems and watched the finish from the pits. Waltrip
and company entertained the mass of fans before the event with an
autograph and fan appreciation session.
“It’s
great to race at this track,” said Waltrip. “Especially over in turn
four, that was fun. Thanks to all the fans for coming out and giving
us this opportunity.”
Adam
Barker #10 captured the Pepsi Pole Award, garnering his top starting spot
in the Sheetz Limited Sportsman 120. Jonathan Cash #07 rolled for
the lead on lap one from his outside pole start, as Wayne Roach challenged
for second. Barker began to fade, dropping out of the top 10 in the
first 10 laps. Billy Myers #05 moved into third, while Eddie Capps
#14 and Jonathan Bailey #89 made up the top five. Myers dove under
Roach on lap 11, making his attempt to track down Cash. Darryl
Carver #5 brought out the first yellow period with a blown engine on lap
16. Cash took advantage of the restart and pulled a clear lead over
Myers. Lapped traffic slowed the leader on lap 35 and allowed Myers
and Roach to close within inches of Cash. As Cash worked for clear
racetrack, he put distance between himself and Myers. Jeffrey Elmore
#30 looped his machine in turn two allowing Myers to catch Cash again.
Myers
began to charge with the restart, and Cash felt the heat on lap 55.
Eddie Capps #14 retired from the fifth spot with a mechanical problem on
lap 57. Bill Moshenek #27, who entered the night atop the point
standings, also had on track problems that forced him to pit at halfway.
Cash led a three-car breakaway, as the field stretched out in the middle
laps. Elmore continued to have more problems, as he apparently lost
his driveshaft on lap 79. As drivers bunched on the restart, Roach
worked on Myers for second. Cash scooted away with the lead, as
Roach shadowed the leader. Polesitter Adam Barker made contact with
the frontstretch wall with 20 laps to go. Wayne Roach pursued Cash
as the green waved.
Driving feverishly inside and out to get a shot at the lead, Cash
slipped out of turn two and Roach swiftly took the advantage. Myers
followed Roach to second, but Cash attempted to regain the runner-up spot.
With less than five to go, Roach built a sizeable lead, as Cash claimed
second over Myers. Cash began to close on the lead with two laps
remaining. Roach held a one car-length lead as the white flag waved.
Cash nudged Roach entering turn three, but Roach held his line and won the
race. Myers finished third. In claiming the win, Roach also
notched the top position in series points.
Johnny Gregory #53 lined up on the point for the East Coast Flathead
Association 20-lap event, but caution soon waved on lap two for a stopped
car on the track. Caution waved again for a two-car incident on lap
eight. Gregory continued to lead for the entire race, easily rolling
to victory over Bobby Williams #72 and Johnny Johnson #85 in the
four-barrel division. Kenneth Tuttle #16 took the two-barrel
victory.
