South
Boston Excitement Continues April 5 with Smirnoff Ice Triple Black Night
South
Boston, Va. (April 5, 2003)— RaceRap.com
Pole winner, Mark McFarland #17 put the hammer down from the start of the
first 110 lap feature for the Late Model Stock Cars in Smirnoff Ice Triple
Black Night at Big Daddy’s South Boston Speedway. Outside pole
sitter, Deac McCaskill #08 faded early as Phillip Morris #01 and last
week's winner Denny Hamlin #99 sped by him. Hard racing in the
middle of the pack saw sparks fly when Jason Dickerson #19 and Jimmy
Mullins #75 made contact; however, both drivers gathered it up and
continued. McFarland opened a sizeable lead by lap 25, as the field
began to spread out. Phillip Morris began to march toward McFarland
by lap 35 and took charge on Lap 41. McFarland kept inching away at
Morris' bumper and pulled underneath him by lap 55. As the crossed
flags marked halfway, McFarland went door to door for the lead against
Morris. Lap after lap, McFarland held to the inside, but could gain
no advantage. Lap traffic worked in Morris' favor, as McFarland had
to lift to avoid an incident. McFarland quickly gathered it back and
applied more pressure by lap 65. Morris held the lead by a nose on
lap 67, but McFarland stayed glued to the inside. McFarland inched
the lead at the line on lap 70, but Morris battled back on Lap 71.
McFarland led lap 74, as Denny Hamlin and Wade Day #92 caught the leaders
for a tight squeeze through lapped cars. Lined nose to tail from
first to fourth, McFarland held the lead on lap 80. Caution let the
leaders catch their breath, as Brandon Hendrick (grandson of the late
legend Ray Hendrick) spun his Flying #11 coming out of turn two.
McFarland pointed his ride to the green, while Day tried to take third
from Hamlin. With 25 to go, McFarland held a five-car advantage over
Morris, with Day still working to get around Hamlin. Day slid under
Hamlin on lap 103, but could not make it stick. As the laps counted
down, McFarland drove out front, followed by Morris, Hamlin, Day, and Dean
Ward #2. McFarland claimed a hard fought victory.
McFarland
aligned atop the field for the second 110-lap Late Model feature, with
Dean Motorsports teammate Denny Hamlin not cutting him any slack.
The double dose of black at the front finally saw Hamlin to the lead on
lap four. Dean Ward wanted second from McFarland on lap 10; however,
several cars blocked the frontstretch as caution waved. Wade Day,
Wayne Ramsey #51, Jon Denning #46 and Terry King #55 were involved.
With 30 laps down, Hamlin led with McFarland and Ward close behind.
Morris and Woody Howard #30 raced in the top 5 as the laps continued to
roll. At halfway, Hamlin saw the crossed flags first, with Howard
and Morris making contact for fourth spot. Howard got in touch with
Morris again on lap 66, but could not make the pass. After several
laps of panel-to-panel pacing, lapped traffic helped Morris keep the spot.
Morris was not so lucky on lap 75, as Brandon Hendrick spun directly in
front of Morris and Howard. Morris plowed Hendrick, while Howard was
able to apply the brakes. With cleanup completed by lap 80, Hamlin
crept up to take the restart, keeping his teammate at bay. McFarland
looked for the lead on lap 84, but was repelled by Hamlin.
Ten laps remained as McFarland tried to make the Late Model sweep,
but Hamlin would not be denied. McFarland finished second, but it
was a double-whammy for Dean Motorsports on Triple Black Night. Ward
finished third, followed by Howard and Jason Dickerson #19.
Jonathan Cash
#07 took the Pepsi Pole for the Sheetz Limited Sportsman, but had to
line up for the start twice. After several cars made contact on the
first lap, a full restart was ordered, and the cars were set to go again.
With a clean getaway, outside polesitter Billy Myers #05 stole the top
position on the start. Rookie contender Bruce Anderson #9 made some
quick moves to better his position, and Jonathan Bailey rolled into the
top 5 by lap 10. Eddie Capps #14 brought out the first yellow for a
spin in turn four. Myers led the restart followed by Cash and 2002
Division Champion Bill Moshenek #27. Three-wide on the restart,
Tommy Peregoy #2 made contact with Jonathan Bailey #89 down the
backstretch bringing a halt to the charge.
With 10 to go, the front four bunched up just before runner-up
Jonathan Cash's machine erupted in a plume of smoke. As a cloud
restricted the view, oil on the asphalt caused Charles Barnes #99, Bailey
and Moshenek to spin. Myers
pulled Wayne Roach #71 on the restart and cruised to victory.
Billy Goble #18
led the Pure Stocks to the stripe for action. Last week's winner
Tommy Wooldridge #20 sat to his outside as the green waved. In a
drag race for the first few laps, Goble was able to slide into the lead by
lap 5. Donald Glass #14 lost a wheel to bring out the first caution.
Goble led the restart, with Wooldridge in tow. Lee Anderson #01 held
close in third, as caution waved again for a single-car incident. Goble
felt pressure from Wooldridge but scooted away by halfway.
With 10 to go,
Goble held off Wooldridge and Anderson for the lead. Wooldridge
looked inside and outside, but Goble slammed the door to get the victory.
Wooldridge, Anderson, Scott Phillips #1 and Glass rounded out the top 5.
Winston Cup
stars headline the April 12 NASCAR All Star Night, featuring a 30-lap
Winston Cup shootout, a 120-lap Sheetz Limited Sportsman race and 20 laps
for the East Coast Flatheads. The 2003 Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip,
Coors Light driver Sterling Marlin, Kenny Wallace and Jamie McMurray will
sign autographs and compete in the Winston Cup shootout.
