NESBITT GETS OILED UP IN HOOTER’S PRO CUP LUCAS OIL 250
AT SOBO (South Boston,VA) Gears
were lubed and ready to turn for Hooter’s Pro Cup Lucas Oil 250
presented by Pepsi at Big Daddy’s South Boston Speedway.
Kertus Davis (#68 Siler City, NC) claimed his first Advance Auto
Parts pole in 60 starts with a speed of 89.56mph (16.078sec).
Northern Division point leader, Jeff Agnew (#73 Floyd, VA)
challenged for the lead on the start, but Davis cleared the way past Eric
Corbett (#75 Hagerstown, MD) to maintain his front running position.
Agnew put the pressure on Davis’ bumper for the lead, just as
Derrick Kelley (#21 Auburndale, FL) looped his machine in turn three.
Agnew had to settle for second as the caution waved.
With 23 cars on the lead lap, Agnew went to work on Davis on the
restart. Several cars made
contact on lap 50 blocking the frontstretch, just in front of the leaders.
As Davis and Agnew cleared lap traffic, their battle began again.
Agnew inched Davis at the line to lead lap 62, while Jason Mignogna
(#17 Greensburg, PA) spun in turn two.
With 100 laps in, Agnew maintained the lead, as Jay Fogleman (#4
Durham, NC) pursued in second. Polesitter,
Davis, faded back to fourth behind Corbett.
Caution waved at the halfway mark, sending everyone, but the leader
scrambling to pit road. Agnew
opted not to pit, while Fogleman cruised through the pits without stopping
just as the green flag waved. When
the field went back to green, several cars challenged Agnew for the front
spot, but Michael Ritch (#28 High Point, NC) emerged as the leader;
however, his lead was only good for 15 laps as Mark Nesbitt (#88s
Fletcher, NC) overtook Ritch on lap 155.
With lap traffic becoming a factor, Nesbitt continued to lead Ritch
until lap 192, when Mignogna spun after contact with Fogleman on the
backstretch. Fogleman served
a stop and go under caution, while Agnew made his pit stop.
12 cars remained on the lead lap when the green waved at lap 199.
With Agnew on new tires, he climbed from 12th to 7th
in only 5 laps and continued to move forward.
As the leaders threaded lap cars, Agnew continued to gain ground.
On lap 221, Allen Purkhiser (#7 Moore, SC) blew an engine with
polesitter Davis spinning on the backstretch after contact with hometown
favorite Stacy Puryear (#11 South Boston, VA).
With the seventh caution of the race, Agnew was listed in fourth on
the restart, behind leader Nesbitt, Ritch, and Brian Ross (#42 Plymouth,
IN). Agnew went for third,
while Puryear went three-wide for eighth on lap 227.
Agnew rolled into second on lap 230 and set his sights on the
leader, Nesbitt. Caution
waved again for a “quickie yellow” on lap 232, when Charles Ray Peele
(#71 Jacksonville, FL) made contact with the inside wall in turn four.
With 15 to go, Agnew pursued Nesbitt, but debris in turn 3 brought
another fast flag. As the lap
cars moved to the rear, the leaders lined up without obstruction for a
showdown to the finish on lap 241. Agnew
slipped to the outside, as Ritch made a move for second. Contact back in
the filed caused sparks to fly, as battles for position waged all around
the asphalt. Agnew appeared to cut a tire and slowed on lap 148.
While Agnew faded, Nesbitt roared to victory over Michael Ritch and
Joel Kauffman #44 Largrange, IN). Local
favorite Stacy Puryear finished seventh. Woody Howard (#30 Chesapeake, VA) started where he left off
last week, but Nick Woodward (#21 High Point, NC) took the early lead for
the NASCAR Coor’s Light Late Models in the first 75 lap feature.
Scott Worley (#88 Long Island, VA…not NY) went back to the
outside early to pick up three positions by lap 20.
Howard motored within inches of Woodward by lap 35, but was not
able to complete the pass. When
lap traffic became an issue, Woodward maintained his advantage, while
Philip Morris (#01 Ruckersville, VA) started a move toward the leaders.
As Woodward cleared lap traffic, Howard closed to Woodward’s
bumper. As the white flag
waved, Howard nudged and rubbed under Woodward, but was unable to keep
Quik Nick from claiming his second victory of the season. Morris finished third, followed by Timothy Peters (#77
Providence, NC), Worley, and Dean Ward (#2 Winston-Salem, NC). Howard started out front over Woodward for race two, while
Timothy Peters held close in third for the first 25 laps. Lap
traffic slowed the leader on lap 36; however, no one could take the
position. With 50 laps in,
Howard led Woodward and Peters with Morris trailing behind.
Brandon Hendrick (Flying #11) looped his ride on lap 60 to bring
out the first caution. Howard jumped out in front of Peters on the restart, as
Woodward and Morris were unable to close the gap.
Worley looped his ride on lap 65, bringing out caution number two.
Peters went to the outside, but Howard held him off.
Howard cruised to victory over Peters, Woodward, and Morris. Joey Dennewitz #26 claimed the pole for the Allison Legacy Series event
with Justin South #45 on the outside for the start. At the drop of
the green flag, Chase Mattioli #1 tapped Mike Jobe #25 into a spin that
brought a full field restart. Dennewitz grabbed the lead and held it
until Howard #7 made a late lap charge to challenge. After swapping
the lead several times, Howard moved to the point, as Derek Lee #29 closed
in third. Howard led the remaining 10 laps and posted his first
victory at South Boston. Allison Legacy Series Results:
