Light Late Models Highlight June 7 Dodge Night at South Boston SOUTH
BOSTON, Va. (June 5, 2003)—
Its slogan might be “Grab life by the horns,” but Dodge grabbed
NASCAR’s Weekly Series by the horns in 2003 when the automaker stepped
up to become the series’ title sponsor. Some of the best NASCAR Dodge
Weekly Series action can be found at Big Daddy’s South Boston
Speedway, and the June 7 Dodge Night presented by Berryman Products
should be no exception. The night will feature Late Model twin 110s, a
Sheetz Limited Sportsman 50-lap race, and 30 laps for the Pure Stock
division. Dodge has
a lot to be proud of, as an Intrepid sits atop South Boston’s Late
Model point standings. Jimmy Mullins helped assert his points lead May
31, as he captured the victory during Armed Forces Night presented by
Bank of America. Philip Morris trails Mullins by six points, and poses a
regular threat to win. Dean Ward sits poised to capitalize on any
misfortune Morris may have, as he is only six markers out of second
place. Fourth-place Jason Dickerson is enjoying his best season to date,
but will have to fight off Wade Day and Woody Howard to retain his
points position. Day and Howard are tied for fifth place. Adding to
the excitement of the Late Model class is the division’s new name.
Dodge Night presented by Berryman Products will mark the debut of the
Coors Light Late Model Stock Division. Coors Light is the fourth
best-selling brand of beer in the United States and Coors Brewing
Co.’s largest selling brand. Coors Light was introduced in 1978 and
was a gold medallist in the 1998 Great American Beer Festival. Wayne
Roach continues to enjoy a comfortable points lead in the Sheetz Limited
Sportsman division, but Jonathan Cash is quickly charging up the points,
and is positioned 18 points behind Roach. Cash became the division’s
only two-time winner this season when he swept the May 31 twin 50s. Bill
Moshenek and rookie Bruce Anderson advanced to third and fourth,
respectively, as engine problems dropped Tommy Peregoy back to fifth
position. The Pure
Stocks are eager to race again, as their last event was the April 26
Pepsi Night. Tommy Wooldridge and Billy Goble are tied for the points
lead. Both drivers have dominated the division, finishing 1-2 in nearly
every race. Scott Slagle
and Donald Glass are the only other drivers to finish second this
season. Scott Phillips, Glass and Lee Anderson round out the top five in
division points. Grandstand
gates for Dodge Night presented by Berryman Products open at 5 p.m.,
with qualifying scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The green flag will fly at 7
p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults. Youth age 10 to 15 pay $5, and children
nine and under are free. The Pepsi Racing for Kids Challenge returns for
children age four to seven. Racing action for South Boston’s youngest
racers starts at 6 p.m. In 2003, Big Daddy’s South Boston Speedway celebrates 46 years of racing excitement and affordable family entertainment.
