Capture March 29 South Boston Doubleheader Victories SOUTH
BOSTON, Va. (March 29, 2003)—
Dean Motorsports made a clean sweep of the twin 150-lap Late Model races
highlighting the March 29 Family Homes of America 300 presented by Sheetz
at Big Daddy’s South Boston Speedway. In
the first Late Model showdown, Denny Hamlin, driver of the Dean
Motorsports No. 99 entry, captured the RaceRap.com pole and cruised to
victory. South Boston’s 2001 Champion Brandon Butler challenged Hamlin
for the top spot, but finished just over a half-second behind the winner.
Cut tires appeared to be the problem of the day, as Eric Sartin, Timothy
Peters and Scott Worley all suffered lacerated rubber. Wayne Grubb, Mark
McFarland and Wade Day unofficially rounded out the top five in a race
that was slowed four times for caution. Hamlin
collected the RaceRap.com pole for the second 150-lap duel. He quickly saw
the top position slip away, as teammate McFarland grabbed the lead. Hamlin
regained the lead, only to relinquish it to Grubb early in the race. Grubb
showed strength until the race has plagued by a series of late-race
cautions for incidents including Nick Woodward, Ernest Winslow and Peyton
Sellers. After the race’s second yellow flag, McFarland contested Grubb
for the lead and took sole possession by lap 123. McFarland led Grubb to
the checkered flag by 1.221 sec., followed by Hamlin, Butler and Day;
however, Grubb contested McFarland's victory with NASCAR officials and
after post-race inspections, three cars were disqualified for not meeting
NASCAR standards. McFarland, Hamlin, and Brandon Butler. In
Sheetz Limited Sportsman action, Billy Myers claimed the Pepsi pole, but
faded just after the green flag fell. The field did not complete one lap
before the yellow flag flew for a crash involving Chris Denny. The 2002
Limited Sportsman champion Bill Moshenek benefited from Myers’
misfortune by inheriting the lead. Moshenek went on to win, becoming the
only winner of the evening that had previously won at South Boston. In
unofficial results, Chad Mason finished second and Jonathan Cash was
third. The
second Sheetz Limited Sportsman seemed to belong to Pepsi polesitter Cash,
as he set sail for victory from the start. Mason had been filling Cash’s
rearview throughout the race, and finally capitalized on lap 47, stealing
the lead and consequently the win. Cash finished second, with Moshenek
third and Tommy Peregoy fourth. In
a show of dominance, Tommy Woolridge led the Pure Stock 30-lap shootout
from start to finish, only being slowed by the race’s two cautions.
Billy Goble finished second, with Lee Anderson, Donald Glass and Scott
Phillips completing the top five. In
the inaugural “Faster Pastor” competition, Brian Edwards of Blessed
Hope Baptist Church in Danville, Va., proved to be the fastest pastor,
while Aaron Jacques, Austen Jacques, Tanner Lindley and Dillian Martin all
were winners in the “Racing for Kids Challenge.” With
four out of the five winners of the night capturing their first wins at
South Boston, it will be interesting to see who visits Victory Lane at
South Boston’s next race, scheduled for April 5. The evening will
feature twin 110s for the NASCAR Late Models, 50 laps for the Sheetz
Limited Sportsman and 30 laps for the Pure Stocks. The Racing for Kids
Challenge continues for children age four to seven. Adults pay $10, youth
age 10 to 15 pay $5, and children nine and under are free. Grandstand
gates open at 5 p.m., with qualifying at 5:30 p.m. Racing begins at 7 p.m.
