Corprew,
Arnett and Boers Survive May 4 Crash Bash I at South Boston
SOUTH
BOSTON, Va. (May 4, 2003)—
Race weekend in Virginia ended May 4 with the Crash Bash I at Big
Daddy’s South Boston Speedway. Like their counterparts at the Richmond
International Raceway this weekend, the events at South Boston were
filled with thrills and spills.
Living
up to its name, the Virginia Mini Cup race truly looked like a miniature
NASCAR Winston Cup race, as some cars were replicas of those that
competed in the May 3 Pontiac Excitement 400. Wayne Corprew captured the
pole, but quickly found retaining the lead was not an easy task. Jerry
Perdue, in a replica of Jerry Nadeau’s U.S. Army car, went
door-to-door with Coprew for several laps, with both drivers swapping
the lead. Wil Smith joined the battle, and the top trio drove away from
the rest of the field. Smith went three-wide with Perdue and a lapped
vehicle just before the halfway mark and overtook the second position.
The race was slowed with three laps remaining because John Smith tagged
the inside wall on the backstretch. As Corprew sailed away on the
restart, Perdue regained possession of second, which is how they
finished the race. Wil Smith took third place, with Willie Wines Sr.,
and Brian Conklin rounding out the top five.
There
is an adage in racing that it’s not where you start, it’s where you
finish. Richard Hayden and Dr. Sheryl Carls started the Enduro on the
front row, but certainly did not finish that way. One by one, cars
dropped from the field and the lead lap, until the event looked more
like a game of survival than a race. Gary Ledbetter proved he had a
strong car early and held the lead for the majority of the race. He
remained uncontested until the last few laps of the race, when Wayne
McHone posted a serious challenge. Despite a tough side-by-side battle,
Ledbetter prevailed over McHone. However, the cars of Ledbetter, McHone
and several other competitors were disqualified in post-race inspection,
giving the victory to Jeff Arnett.
The
No. 222 of Rick Boers outlasted the competitors in the demolition derby
field, as Boers became the first South Boston demolition derby winner in
nearly two decades.
The
NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series returns to action May 10 at Big Daddy’s
South Boston Speedway with Puckett Dodge Night presented by Arctic Cat.
The NASCAR Late Models will compete in twin 110s, the Sheetz Limited
Sportsman cars will race for 50 laps, and the Pure Stocks will have 30
laps. Grandstand gates open at 5 p.m., and the green flag waves at 7
p.m. The Racing for Kids Challenge returns for children age four to
seven at 6 p.m. Adults pay $10, youth 10 to 15 pay $5, and children nine
and under are free.
