Fultz, Mullins and Cash Wait Out Rain to Win May 31 at South Boston

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. (June 1, 2003)—After a three-hour rain delay, the May 31 Armed Forces 150 presented by Bank of America finally got underway, and it was defending NASCAR Kodak Southeast Series champion Jeff Fultz emerging victorious. Jimmy Mullins and Jonathan Cash joined Fultz on the night’s winners’ list.

Jarod Robie captured his first-ever Bud pole for the NASCAR Kodak Southeast Series 150, turning a lap of 15.644 sec. (92.048 mph). Part of the qualifying procedure in all four NASCAR Elite Divisions is a draw for inversion. The Budweiser can used to determine the inversion revealed that six cars would be inverted for the race, thus defending race winner David Reutimann and Jeff Fultz inherited the front row. Fultz quickly jumped into the lead on the start, but the race was slowed for a spin in the opening laps. Fultz held the lead until 2000 series champion Billy Bigley Jr., nudged past on lap 14. Reutimann retired early from his victory defense after a spin and electrical problems sidelined him for the night. Bigley sailed away from Fultz, stretching his lead to nearly a half-track’s advantage.  A series of four cautions allowed Fultz and third-place Jason Hogan to catch up with Bigley, but Bigley always managed to maintain his lead. Fultz used every inch of racetrack he could to get around Bigley, and by lap 143, he resigned to tapping the rear bumper of Bigley’s Chevrolet. In the final laps, Bigley dived low, with Fultz clinging to the outside. The lapped car of Billy McGinnis stalled Bigley’s charge, leaving Fultz the opportunity to take the win. Bigley finished second, followed by Hogan in third.

The Late Model cars started by championship points, meaning Jimmy Mullins and Philip Morris graced the front row, with Dean Ward and Wade Day following. That order remained unchanged through most of the 150-lap race, and by the race’s midway point, Mullins held an extensive lead. With about 40 laps remaining, Woody Howard sneaked up on Day and passed him, then set his sights on Ward’s Chevrolet. With five laps to go, Howard overtook third place from Ward. Mullins cruised to his first victory at Big Daddy’s South Boston Speedway and retained his points lead. Morris, Howard and Ward completed the top four in a race that was slowed six times by caution.

The Sheetz Limited Sportsman drivers also started their races by points. A miscue caused points leader Wayne Roach to receive the black flag at the beginning of the first twin 50, which gave Jonathan Cash the lead. The defending Sheetz Limited Sportsman champion Bill Moshenek elevated himself from the fourth position to second, with Bruce Anderson and Billy Myers in tow. Tommy Peregoy started in second, but engine woes eliminated him on lap 36. With four laps remaining, Myers finally bypassed Anderson, as Cash went on to claim his first victory of the season.

The first Sheetz Limited Sportsman race went caution-free, but the yellow flew quickly in the second 50-lap race. Glenn Huddleston and Eddie Capps got together on the backstretch at the opening of the race. Wayne Roach started on the point, with Bill Moshenek on his outside. Jonathan Cash, determined to sweep the night’s races, passed Moshenek by lap 15, then took the lead on lap 36. Cash held on for the sweep, with Roach, Billy Myers and Chad Mason following him to the line.
