Former South Boston Speedway champion Wayne Patterson will be remembered Saturday
SOUTH BOSTON, VA. — South Boston Speedway will remember one of its talented track champions Saturday night prior to the running of the Charles Anderson Lawn Care 150 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series race program.
The first of five races scheduled Saturday night is slated to get the green flag at 7 p.m.
Patterson, who claimed track championships at America's Hometown Track in 1987 and 1992, died last week in a single-vehicle crash in Nottoway County, Va. During his lengthy racing career, Patterson, who resided in Jetersville, Va., claimed more than 100 victories — including 27 at South Boston Speedway, where he ranks among the top five winningest drivers in track history.
Patterson was known throughout the region as a fierce competitor and a talented racecar driver.
"Everyone at South Boston Speedway was extremely saddened to learn of Wayne's death last week," General Manager Cathy Rice said. "He was a driver who was very well-respected and a friend to so many competitors and fans. It is only fitting that we remember Wayne Saturday night. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with his family."
Patterson had raced only sparing in recent years, including select appearances at South Boston Speedway in the Hall's Garage Dodge.
Highlighting Saturday's racing action will be a 150-lap race for the drivers in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Late Model Stock Car Division and twin 50-lap races for the competitors in the Limited Sportsman Division.
Others events slated Saturday include races for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and the Southern Vintage Modifieds.
Pit gates will open Saturday at 12:45 p.m. Practice for all divisions will be held from 2:15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get underway at 5:15 p.m.
Admission is $10 for adults. Youth, ages 7-12, will be admitted for $5 when accompanied by a paying adult and children, ages six and under, are admitted free with a paid adult.
