Clay Rogers brings impressive point lead into USARacing Pro Cup event Saturday at SoBo

SOUTH BOSTON, VA. There are only two events remaining before the USARacing Championship Series begins and the ninth of the 10 regular season events will be held Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.

The South Boston 250 will get the green flag at Americas Hometown Track at 7 p.m. and will be followed by an event for the touring Rolling Thunder Modified Series.

Rogers brings a 129-point lead over Bobby Gill into the South Boston 250, but with the exception of a victory in the 2006 event, when the series was known as the Hooters Pro Cup Series, he has not experienced a great deal of success on the four-tenths mile asphalt oval.

Its not one of my stronger tracks, Rogers was quoted in a USARacing Series press release this week. I won there in the Pro Cup Series in 2006, but that was the only good run Ive been able to pull off at South Boston.

I enjoy going there, but its definitely got some quirks about the track that are hard to overcome, or they have been for me anyway, Rogers continued. The great thing about South Boston over the last few years is the groove has opened up and there is a high side of the race track.

You can run on the bottom and people like Jeff Agnew and Benny Gordon like to run basically on the apron, Rogers added. So, once the track started developing into a multi-groove race track it got to be a lot better racing.

Rogers, who has amassed three wins, five top-five finishes and seven top-10 runs thus far this season, said South Boston Speedway is a fun track to race, but at the same time is very demanding.

Among other likely contenders for a victory Saturday night in the South Boston 250 are former South Boston Speedway track champion Drew Herring, Jeff Agnew and Benny Gordon.

Herring claimed the Late Model Stock Car championship at South Boston Speedway in 2006 after piling up nine wins in 19 races.

Agnew has been one of the more consistent drivers at Americas Hometown Track through the years. He owns the record for the most top-five finishes with seven and the most top-10 finishes with nine.

Gordon holds the track record for most Pro Cup Series wins with three and the most laps led with 645. He has also garnered four pole positions and owns the track qualifying record of 15.486 seconds and 92.987 miles per hour.

Practice for the USARacing Pro Cup Series and the Rolling Thunder Modifieds will be held Saturday 12 noon until 2:55 p.m. Qualifying time trials for the two divisions will get underway at 4 p.m. and will be followed at 5:45 p.m. by a on-track autograph session for fans.

The South Boston 250 will get the green flag at 7 p.m. and will be followed by the 75-lap Rolling Thunder Modified Series event.

Adult general admission is $15 if purchased at the speedway prior to 5 p.m. Friday. Adult general admission price will be $20 Race day.
