SoBo division champions to be crowned Saturday during GCR presents Spaulding Equipment Late Model 150 racing program
SOUTH BOSTON, VA. — A season of exciting racing, hard work, and dedication will be capped will be capped off Saturday night at South Boston Speedway when the 2012 NASCAR Whelen All American Series division champions will be crowned.
America’s Hometown Track will host the GCR presents Spaulding Equipment Late Model 150 racing program Saturday. Four races will highlight the night of racing action with the first event of the evening getting the green flag at 7 p.m.
The featured attraction of the night will be a 150-lap race for the drivers in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division. Also slated Saturday night will be races for the competitors in the Limited Sportsman Division and the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.
All three events mark the final points races of the campaign for the competitors. Saturday’s night of racing action will also feature an event for the touring Legendary Flathead Ford Racing Association and a special appearance for the Pro Wing Champ Karts.
After putting together a season of consistency in 2012, Matthew Bowling is on the verge of securing the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division championship.
Bowling, a one-time winner this season, has finished no worse than eighth place in his 19 starts on the historic four-tenths mile asphalt oval this season. He also owns a pair of second-place finishes and five third-place finishes.
Heading into Saturday’s 150-lap race, Bowling owns a 27-point lead over second-place Peyton Sellers, who has won two races in 2012. Sellers is a former NASCAR Whelen All American Series national champion and also a former title winner at South Boston Speedway.
Bobby McCarty, a seven-time winner in 2012, is the current points leader in the Limited Sportsman Division. McCarty owns a 23-point lead over second-place Danny Willis Jr., who has motored to Victory Lane six times in 2012.
Trey Crews will take the green flag for the start of the final Budweiser Pure Stock Division event of the season with a comfortable 46-point lead over Joe Allred III in the chase for the championship.
Pit registration for the GCR presents Spaulding Equipment Late Model 150 racing program will begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday. Practice for all divisions will be held from 3 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get underway at 5:30 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and admission will be $10 for adults and children under the age of six will be admitted free with a paid adult.
