South Boston Speedway to host afternoon racing action for second straight Saturday

SOUTH BOSTON, VA. — After opening the 2014 season last weekend, South Boston Speedway will waste no time notching its second event of the campaign this weekend.

America’s Hometown Track will return to action on Saturday, March 22, for the running of the NASCAR Whelen Late Model 100 racing program. The event will have a special afternoon starting time of 2 p.m.

The featured attraction of the afternoon will be a 100-lap battle for the drivers in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division. Also headlining the five-race program will be events for the Limited Sportsman Division, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division, the Modified Division and the debut race for the new Hornets Division.

Former NASCAR Whelen All American Series national champion Peyton Sellers jumped out to the early points lead in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division last weekend by sweeping the season-opening twin 100-lap events.

Matt Bowling, a former South Boston Speedway champion, placed second in both Late Model Stock Car events last weekend and is second in the early point standings. He is followed in the top five by Josh Oakley, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series competitor Jeb Burton, and Tommy Lemons Jr.

Defending Limited Sportsman Division champion Danny Willis Jr. opened his title defense last weekend on a strong note with a victory. J.D. Eversole, Daniel Moss, Tommy Peregoy and Joey Throckmorton followed him in the top five of the season-opener.

Greg Autry secured a win in the first event for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division. Johnny Layne placed second and Jeff Deering was third.

Pit gates will open on March 22 at 9 a.m. and practice for all divisions will be held from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. A mandatory meeting for drivers will be held at 11:45 p.m. and qualifying time trials will roll off at 12:30 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at noon.

Admission will be $10 for adults. Children, ages six and under, will be admitted free with a paid adult. Season tickets, priced at only $150, currently remain on sale and can be purchased at the speedway office.
