NASCAR Green Day Saturday at SoBo will feature Southern Modifieds, Late Models

SOUTH BOSTON, VA. — Smokey Bear will be among the many fans in attendance Saturday afternoon when South Boston Speedway hosts NASCAR Green Day.

Smokey Bear and the Virginia Department of Forestry will be on hand Saturday afternoon when America’s Hometown Track hosts the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour 150 racing program. The first race of the afternoon will roll to the green flag at 2 p.m.

The featured attractions of the day will be a 150-lap battle for the touring competitors in the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modifed Tour and a pair of 75-lap events for the drivers in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division.

Each of the five previous NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour events at South Boston Speedway has featured different winners. George Brunnhoelzl III and Andy Seuss will have an opportunity to become the first multi-time winners at the historic four-tenths mile asphalt oval this weekend.

Brunnhoelzl is the defending winner of the South Boston event and he has claimed seven consecutive podium finishes. Seuss, who won the first NASCAR Whelen Southern Modifed Tour event at South Boston Speedway, has won four of the past six tour events dating back to the end of last season.

Saturday’s event at America’s Hometown Track marks the first of two appearances at the facility during the 2014 campaign.

J.R. Bertuccio owns a one-point lead over Andy Seuss in the early stages of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour standings. Bertuccio and Seuss each own one win this season. Brunnhoelzl, a multi-time NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour champion, is third in the standings. He is just five points out of first place and five ahead of fourth place Burt Myers.

Two-time winner and former NASCAR Whelen All American Series national champion Peyton Sellers is the leader in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division point standings at South Boston Speedway.

Sellers is 12 points ahead of former South Boston Speedway champion Matt Bowling. Austin Thaxton, a one-time winner this season, is third in the standings and is five points ahead of fourth-place Josh Oakley. Bobby McCarty sits fifth in the standings and is only four points behind Oakley.

Practices for the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division will be held Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 9:50 a.m. and from 10:25 a.m. until 10:40 a.m. The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will have practice sessions from 9:55 a.m. until 10:20 a.m. and from 10:45 a.m. until 11:10 a.m.

A mandatory meeting for Late Model Stock Car drivers will be held at 11 a.m. and qualifying time trials will roll off at 11:30 p.m. The NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division will qualify first and will be followed by time trials for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour at approximately 12:15 p.m.

Grandstand gates will open at 11 a.m. An autograph session, featuring the competitors in the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour and the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division will be held trackside at 1:20 p.m.

Advance tickets are on sale and priced at $10 each for adults. Advance tickets will be available through 5 p.m. on Friday, April 4. Adult tickets on the day of the race will be priced at $15. Youth, ages 7 - 12, will be admitted for $5 with a paying adult, and children, ages six and under, will be admitted free with a paying adult.
