Increased Purse, Bonuses Make July 1 Thunder Road 200 Bigger Than Ever At South Boston Speedway

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. (June 21, 2017) – Late Model Stock drivers throughout the region always circle South Boston Speedway’s July 4th weekend race on their calendar. They probably just circled it again.

The track announced over the weekend that the Thunder Road Harley-Davidson NASCAR Whelen Late Model 200 on July 1 will pay $6,500 to win, $700 to start and that $2,500 in bonus awards had been added to the purse.

In addition to the 200-lap Late Model race there will also be a 100-lap Limited Sportsman race, a 50-lap race for the Budweiser Pure Stock division and a 15-lap race for the Budweiser Hornets Division.

While there will be a night full of racing action, there’s much more on tap for the fans. There will be a prerace concert behind the main grandstand featuring Mike Brooks and the Konnection Band from 4:30 to 7 p.m. and an on-track autograph session prior to the race.

Once the engines quiet down at the end of the evening, the sky will come alive with the area’s largest fireworks display.

“There is going to be so much going on for the fans and all of us to enjoy on July 1st,” said South Boston Speedway General Manager Cathy Rice. “It’s a full night of fun, family entertainment. It’s a night that everyone looks forward to every year.”

The competitors certainly have to be looking forward to the payout in both the Late Model and Limited divisions.

Sparks Oil has posted a $1,000 pole award and a $500 award for the driver leading the most laps in the Late Model event. Stallings Collison Center will award a $1,000 bonus to the driver leading at the halfway point of the Late Model race.

Stallings Collision Center is also posting a $500 award to the Limited Sportsman pole winner and a $250 bonus for the halfway leader.

The Thunder Road Harley-Davidson NASCAR Whelen Late Model 200 is also the first leg of the Virginia Triple Crown, which rewards the driver with the best overall finish in the three biggest NASCAR Late Model races in the state. The other two events in the Triple Crown are the Hampton Heat at Langley Speedway and the Valley Star Credit Union 300 at Martinsville Speedway. The driver that has the best overall finish in those three events picks up a $10,000 bonus in victory lane following the Martinsville finale.

Grandstand gates will open at 4 p.m. on July 1, with live music beginning at 4:30 p.m. The autograph session will begin on the front stretch at 5:30 and the green flag will fly at 7.

Advance tickets are $15 each and can be purchased at the South Boston Speedway office, or by calling the ticket office at 877.440.1540. On race day tickets will be $20 for adults and $10 for youth ages 7-12. Children six and under will be admitted free with a paying adult.
