Popular Mod 4 Division Will Make Its Debut At South Boston Speedway In 2018 With Eight Races

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. (December 11, 2017) – South Boston Speedway is introducing a division new to the track in 2018 but one that is familiar with fans and competitors in the region.

The Mod 4 Division will debut at the track’s second event of the season on April 7 with a 30-lap race. The division will feature light-weight, rear-wheel drive cars that run a high-revving four-cylinder engine.

The division has been a popular, strong class at Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, which recently announced it would not be open for stock-car racing in 2018.

“It is never good when a weekly racing track closes,” said South Boston Speedway general manager Cathy Rice. “Several of the Mod 4 teams from Motor Mile contacted us about the possibility of having that class here. We saw it as a great opportunity to introduce an exciting division to our fans and competitors.”

The Mod 4 Division has seven race dates at South Boston Speedway in 2018 for a total of eight races. In addition to the April 7 30-lapper, the division will have 30-lap races on April 28, May 26, June 9, July 28, and September 8. The division will run twin 15-lap races on August 25.

Ronnie Byrd has fielded Mod 4 cars at Motor Mile for several years. He was disappointed when he discovered that track wasn’t opening this year, but excited when he found out South Boston had added the division.

“This is a perfect class for the weekly race as well as a stepping stone for drivers who are moving up from lower divisions,” said Byrd.

“The excitement is high among drivers and crews looking forward to the 2018 Mod 4 race season at South Boston.”

Anyone interested in fielding an entry in the Mod 4 class at South Boston Speedway this season should call the track at 877.440.1540.

South Boston’s 61st season will open on Saturday, March 24 with twin 100-lap races for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Division, a 50-lap Limited Sportsman event, a 30-lap Pure Stock race and a 15-lap Hornets race.
