SOUTH BOSTON, VA (April 12, 2025) – Nathan Crews is developing a penchant for winning big races.
The Long Island, Virginia resident won Saturday’s Second Annual Kenny Meadows Limited Sportsman Memorial Feature Race at South Boston Speedway, capturing the $3,000 winner’s prize in the richest Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division feature race ever held at the .4-mile oval.
This is the second straight year that Crews has won South Boston Speedway’s showcase Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division race.
“I didn’t think it could get any better than it did last year but, I believe this year it’s a little bit better,” Crews said after winning the race for the second time. “I thought last year it was the biggest race I’ve ever won, and I believe this year puts the icing on the cake. I’m very thankful to have the car and the ability to win this race.”
It was a dominant win for Crews who pulled away from his challengers during a 51-lap run to the finish that followed the last of the race’s five caution periods and drove to a 3.245-second win over Cory Dunn of Salem, Virginia, who was the runner-up in last year’s race.
“Honestly, we were pretty good today,” Dunn pointed out. “It’s a small win for us. We all want to win, that’s what we’re here for. Coming out here with no practice leading up to today, it feels like a small win. We made some changes on the car throughout the day today to get it better. We know what we need to work on coming back to get the car better.”
Crews was surprised he could pull away from his challengers to the extent that he did.
“I was very surprised because throughout the day I didn’t think we were the best car,” he pointed out. “I knew we were pretty good, maybe top three. I thought I was going to have to man up on the wheel and that’s what I did from lap one. I gave it 110 percent.”
Karl Budzevski of Montvale, Virginia, finished third.
The remainder of the finishing order for the race was unofficial following the event. Lane Woods of Moneta, Virginia crossed the finish line fourth and Drew Dawson of Nathalie, Virginia was unofficially fifth in the 18-car field.
The unofficial remainder of the top 10 drivers included Tristan Brunelli, Bob Davis, Shawn Hopkins, Jared Dawson of Nathalie, Virginia and Trace Daniel of Sutherlin, Virginia.
Defending South Boston Speedway Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division champion Jason Myers of Hurt, Virginia won the pole for the race, led the first three laps and was in contention before being forced to the sidelines with a mechanical issue.
The race was slowed by five caution periods and two red flags, all of which occurred in the first 25 laps of the race.
Many contributions to the event made the 75-lap Kenny Meadows Limited Sportsman Memorial Feature Race the richest Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division race ever held at South Boston Speedway.
In addition to the $3,000 winner’s prize and $500 to start the race, there were a number of prizes and awards including a $250 Anderson Turf Management Limited Sportsman Pole Award, a $250 Aqua Pros Hard Charger Award for the driver that gained the most positions in the race, and a $500 Surprise Finishing Position Bonus from Ronnie Ratliff Service Center and LS Tractor that was picked on race day.
Also, there were $200, $100 and $50 Surprise Starting Positions awards from the Meadows Family, HPI caliper bolts and shifter, and prize packs from R&S Race Cars.
Purse sponsors for the race included Anderson Outdoor Solutions, Pro Graphx, Max Kendall Lumber & Tin, Frye Fence & Curbscaping, Eagles and Eagle Riders No. 4420, Famous Subs & More, Harbour Garage & Towing, Piedmont Realty, DCT Towing & Recovery, and Lisa Spencer, Realtor.
Also included among the purse sponsors were Martin’s Auto Body and Restoration, Sellers Racing, Billy's AC Service, Buddy Scoops Ice Cream, Apple's Engine Rebuilding, Shane Perkins Construction LLC, Auto Rehab, South Atlantic Data & Design, Helical Precision, and Bowling Logging and Chipping Inc. Lawless Welding, Pembelton Forest Products, Chip Wyatt State Farm Agent, R&S Race Cars, Daryn Cockram Towing, Mincey’s Graphics, Meeks Pic & Pull, McMillion Automotive, and Bassett Moose Lodge No. 383 were also purse sponsors.
The race honored the late Kenny Meadows who passed away December 7, 2021 at age 56 due to COVID-19. Meadows was a life-long racing enthusiast. He was crew chief for his son, Calvin Meadows,’ racing efforts and helped many other teams throughout the years as well. Kenny Meadows was involved in racing for 14 years.
Peyton Sellers Wins 100-Lap Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division Race
Two-time NASCAR national champions and seven-time South Boston Speedway champion Peyton Sellers of Danville, Virginia successfully fended off multiple challenges from Trevor Ward of Winston-Salem, North Carolina to win the 100-lap Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division race that was the co-feature race of Saturday afternoon’s Danville Toyota Race Day event at South Boston Speedway.
Sellers led the last 93 laps of the race and edged Ward by just over a second in a six-lap dash to the finish that followed the last of the race’s two caution periods to earn his second win in three starts this season at South Boston Speedway and capture his 60th career win at the .4-mile oval.
“Wins are never taken for granted, especially here at South Boston because anything can happen,” Sellers remarked. “We had a really good car last week and had to put a clip on it. We got it back together and it showed up in rare form today.”
Sellers noted he had the edge when it came to the longer green-flag runs.
“We were able to be really good on the long runs today,” he pointed out. “Trevor was a little better on the short runs and it just played in our favor.”
Ward, who has a third-place finish, a win, and a runner-up finish in his three starts here this season called his runner-up finish “a good points night. Peyton was a little bit better on the longer runs. It seemed we had a little better short run. We just came up a little short.”
Darren Krantz Jr, finished third, Mike Looney of Catawba, Virginia finished fourth and Blake Stallings of Danville, Virginia finished fifth. The rest of the top 10 included Jacob Borst of Elon, North Carolina, Landon Pembelton of Amelia, Virginia, Deac McCaskill of Raleigh, North Carolina, Toby Layne of Farmville, Virginia and Jeff Sparks of Ackworth, Georgia.

His win in the division’s season-opener gives him wins in his last three starts at South Boston Speedway. DeCarlo won the final two races of the 2024 season.
DeCarlo edged defending division champion Jordaine Penick of Meherrin, Virginia by .599-second in winning the caution-free race.
