SOUTH BOSTON VA (June 13, 2026) – Peyton Sellers found his groove, Trevor Ward regained the points lead and a mechanical issue sent Landon Pembelton’s car up in flames.
Those were the big takeaways from Saturday night’s 125-lap Hitachi Energy Late Model Stock Car Division race, the headline race of the Benchmark Community Bank Race Night event at South Boston Speedway.
Sellers won the race, earning his third victory of the season – putting the competition on notice that he will expects to be among the top contenders in the June 27 Thunder Road Harley-Davidson 200, the opening race of the Virginia Late Model Triple Crown presented by FloRacing.
“We’ve been “off” and to finally turn the page tonight makes us feel we’re moving in the right direction,” Sellers remarked. “There’s no quit in this team. We’ve been “off.” That’s a part of racing. Trevor and those guys have been good. Landon has come on strong over the past month. Here we are tonight, and hopefully we’ve got a rebound.”
Sellers led twice for a total of 81 laps. He took the lead from Ward on the 50th circuit and led the rest of the way, edging Ward by 2.122 seconds at the finish.
While Ward had to settle for a runner-up finish after having led 44 laps, it was a strong run nonetheless.
“We tried some stuff for the '200' and it seemed to work pretty well,” Ward noted.
“The speedy-dry kind of threw us for a curve ball when Landon had some motor issues. I’ll take a second tonight and build on it.”
Ward and Pembelton were tied for the division points lead entering the race but Ward unofficially regained the points lead as Pembelton encountered an engine issue and finished 11th.
“I don’t like taking it (the points lead) like that,” Ward remarked. “Obviously it gave us a little bit of a points lead but I’d rather duke it out with Landon one-on-one. Unfortunately, in racing things happen for one party versus the other.”
Pembelton was up among the lead pack of cars when an issue occurred that caused his car to erupt in a vicious amount of flame. The Amelia, Virginia resident escaped the flames unharmed. After the fire was extinguished, his team made repairs and got him back into the race, albeit a lap down.
Landon S. Huffman crossed the finish line third, Conner Wedell of Centerville, Maryland crossed the finish line in fourth place and Bobby McCarty of Madison, North Carolina crossed the finish line in fifth place.
The results of the race remained unofficial following the event per track NASCAR officials.
Drew Dawson Takes Win In 50-Lap Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division Race

Drew Dawson of Nathalie, Virginia became the third repeat winner in the Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division with his victory in the 50-lap race that was part of Saturday night’s Benchmark Community Bank Race Night event at South Boston Speedway.
Dawson entered the weekend sitting in third place in the NASCAR Local Racing Series Powered by O’Reilly Auto Parts Division II national point standings.
He took the lead from Chris Elliott of Bullock, North Carolina and led the final 35 circuits to earn his second win of the season.
Dennis Holdren of Roanoke, Virginia, Dan Rogers of Powhatan, Virginia and Brian Rundstrom Jr. of Green Bay, Virginia rounded out the top five finishers.
The race was highly competitive with the lead swapping hands five times among four drivers. Dawson led 35 laps, Elliott led twice for 11 laps, Rundstrom led for three laps and Tristan Brunelli led the opening lap of the race.
Johnny Layne, Dillon Davis Split Pure Stock Twinbill; Layne Ties Win Record
Johnny Layne of Halifax, Virginia tied the record for all-time career wins in the Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division with his win in the first race of the division’s twin 15-lap races Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.

Layne’s fifth win of the season gives him 37 career wins in the division, tying former division champion Nathan Crews’ record of 37 career wins.
Dillon Davis won the second race of the twin-race event to earn his first victory of the season. His win made him the fourth different driver to win a race in the division this season.
Under the track’s handicapping system Layne started seventh in the first race and quickly sped to the front, passing leader B.J. Reaves on the eighth lap. Once in front he fended off a challenge from Davis and edged Davis by 1.062-seconds to take the win.
A trio of South Boston, Virginia residents followed in order with Reaves, his brother, Zach Reaves and Jacob Sanford rounding out the top five finishers.

In the nightcap, Davis took the lead from Reaves with seven laps to go and edged Jay Hemenway of Wake Forest, North Carolina by .442-second to earn the win. Layne finished third after starting midfield with B.J. Reaves and Kendall Milam of Keeling, Virginia rounding out the top five finishers.
There were two lead changes among three drivers. Jacob Sanford led the first three laps before B.J. Reaves took the lead away. Reaves led five laps before Davis took the lead on the ninth lap and led the rest of the way.
Jason DeCarlo Wins 20-Lap Dollar General Hornets Division Race, Grabs $100 Bounty

Landon Milam of Keeling, Virginia was a wanted man competing in Saturday night’s 20-lap Dollar General Hornets Division race.
After having won five consecutive races a $100 bounty was posted by Hook & Haul Trailers, a company owned by Limited Sportsman Division competitor Eric Winslow, for any driver that could break Milam’s win streak with Milam still competing at the end of the race.
Former division champion Jason DeCarlo of Nelson, Virginia earned his first win of the season and happily collected the $100 bounty. He took the lead from Chris Penick of Evington, Virginia on the third lap and held it the rest of the way to win the caution-free race.
Penick finished second, 2.036 seconds behind DeCarlo with Charles Clardy of South Boston, Virginia finishing third, Cameron Goble of Ringgold, Virginia taking fourth place and Max Sangillo of Farmville, Virginia rounding out the top five finishers.
