SOUTH BOSTON, VA (May 21, 2026) – When Landon Milam reached Chris Penick’s rear bumper, there was only one thing on his mind.

Milam muscled his way past Penick with two laps to go and won the Dollar General Hornets Division feature at South Boston Speedway on May 16 after having started at the rear of the field. The win, his 11th career victory in the division, vaulted him to the top of the Hornets all-time career wins list.

“I was thinking more about the record than the win,” Milam said of his thoughts over the closing laps of the race. “The last time I got under him at his (rear) quarterpanel he (Penick) went to try to run me to the barrels (at the inside wall), and I never let off the gas. That’s how it played out.”

In winning his third race in a row and earning his third win in five starts this season, the Keeling, Virginia resident eclipsed the former record of 10 career wins held by two former division champions: Josh Dawson of Halifax, Virginia and Kevin Currin of Chase City, Virginia.

“They are two of the greatest to do it in this division,” Milam pointed out. “To be up there with them and pass their win record, I’m blessed.”

Dawson, who won the Hornets Division title in 2021, raced in the division for four seasons and tallied his 10 wins over the course of two seasons. He won two races in 2019 and followed it up by winning eight of his 10 starts en route to the division title in 2021.

Joshua Dawson won 10 Hornets Division races in his career and still holds the record for most Hornets wins in a season with 8.

“I was proud of it when I did it,” Dawson remarked. “I’m glad it (the record) got broken so that somebody else could experience the joy I felt.

“It wasn’t a surprise to me that the record was broken,” Dawson continued. “I’m glad to see the record broken by a young boy. I figured it was just a matter of time before the record was broken.”

While Milam topped Dawson and Currin on the division’s all-time career wins list, there is another mark out there for Milam to shoot for.

“I’ve still got a record out there,” said Dawson, referencing his eight wins in 2021. “He hasn’t beaten my record for most wins in one season. We’ll see if that (record) holds up.”

Currin, the 2014 and 2019 Hornets Division champion, figured the record would be broken someday.

“Records are made to be broken,” said Currin who logged two wins in 2014, one win in 2018, three victories in 2019 and four wins in 2022.

“A young man like that with the equipment he’s got is going to break the record. That was something he was striving to do and someone his age with his drive could definitely get it done. I’d like to see where he stops, how many wins he can get.”

Kevin Currin won 10 races and two Hornets Division titles at South Boston Speedway in his career.

The two-time champion Currin, who won his titles in 2014 and 2019, said he wasn’t surprised the record was broken by a member of the Milam family which has had three generations of family members compete at South Boston Speedway.

“Looking back and thinking about it, I thought it would probably be a member of the Milam family (to break the record) as heavy as they are into racing. I’m sure he (Landon Milam) is younger now than I was when I started racing. There’s no telling what his total number of wins will be whenever he gives it up.”

Milam will be looking to add to his win total in the 20-lap Dollar General Hornets Division race that will be part of the six-race Oak River Realty Race Night event on Saturday night, May 30 at South Boston Speedway.
