South Boston Speedway Announces 2027 Racing Schedule; Season Opens March 20 with Late Models and Fourth Annual King of the Modifieds

Special events include Virginia Triple Crown Kickoff on Saturday, July 3; Champions to be Crowned September 18

SOUTH BOSTON, VA (September 24, 2026) – The 2027 South Boston Speedway racing schedule has been unveiled with one of the biggest events of the season featured as its season-opener once again.

The 14-event slate opens on Saturday afternoon, March 20, with the Fourth Annual SMART Modified Tour King of the Modifieds, one of the country’s premier events for tour-type Modifieds. It’ll feature many of the country’s top Modified drivers in a 125-lap feature race.

South Boston Speedway’s Hitachi Energy Late Model Stock Car Division competitors will also be in action, kicking off their 2027 season championship chase as part of the March 20 season-opener, as well.

The March 20 King of the Modifieds event will be the first of three scheduled special racing events on the track’s 2027 season schedule.

“As we always do, we’re announcing our schedule to allow all our fans, competitors and partners as much time as possible to make their plans for next season,” South Boston Speedway General Manager Brandon Brown said. “We are extremely excited to have the SMART Modified Tour return with the King of the Modifieds for the fourth straight season. For three straight years, the King of the Modifieds has drawn a great field of cars and drivers, and the competitors put on an incredible show for our fans who pack the place. The Modifieds and our Hitachi Energy Late Models are the perfect combination to start the season here at South Boston, and we’re thrilled to do it again.”

The first event featuring all four of the tracks’ NASCAR Local Racing Series powered by O’Reilly Auto Parts racing divisions will be the speedway’s second event of the season, which is set for Saturday afternoon April 3. The event will include races for the Hitachi Energy Late Model Stock Car Division as well as the Limited Sportsman, Pure Stock and Hornets Divisions.

The 2027 South Boston Speedway campaign will be shaped by NASCAR Local Series events, set for April 24, May 1, May 15, May 29, June 12, July 3, July 17, August 7, August 21, September 4 and September 18.

The September 18 event will be the culmination of the South Boston Speedway’s NASCAR Local Racing Series Championship calendar, with all four of the track’s NASCAR division champions being crowned.

On Saturday Night, July 3, South Boston Speedway will once again host the kickoff race to the Virginia Late Model Triple Crown, a 200-lap race featuring the best-of-the-best in Late Model Stock Car competition.

The track’s Independence Day Weekend racing extravaganza will include races for the track’s Limited Sportsman, Pure Stock, and Hornets Divisions. A patriotic Fourth of July fireworks show will be held after the final race of the night.

The zMAX CARS Tour will return to South Boston Speedway in 2027 with races for its Late Model Stock Car Tour and Pro Late Model Tour. The date of the event will be announced later.

The season’s first three events on March 20, April 3, and April 24 will be daytime events with the feature racing beginning at 2 p.m. The September 18 NASCAR Local Racing Series Championship event will also be a daytime event with a 2 p.m. start. All other NASCAR Local Racing Series events are scheduled for a 7 p.m. green flag.

For the third consecutive season, drivers and teams in South Boston Speedway’s four NASCAR divisions will race for more than $75,000 in season-end monetary awards as part of the Championship Loyalty Bonus Program.
