Smith, McCaskill Split Late Model Wins At South Boston Speedway
Hampton, Va., driver Nick Smith won his third race in a row and fourth of the season in the first of two 75-lap NASCAR Whelen Late Model Stock Car races, while Raleigh, N.C., driver Deac McCaskill took home a win from the rear of the field in the second race to cap a strong night of racing Saturday at South Boston Speedway.
Smith passed pole sitter Dane Rudolph of Wamberal, Australia on the opening lap and was never challenged in winning over Josh Oakley of Rougemont, N.C. Jon Denning of Springfield, N.J., finished third, while Justin Johnson of Durham, N.C., and David Quackenbush of Lorton, Va., finished fourth and fifth.
McCaskill, who dropped out of the first race after encountering engine problems, changed engines between races and took the second Late Model race, despite starting twice from the rear of the field, once at the start of the race and once following a caution.
McCaskill tore through the field and went door-to-door with Johnson the last several laps before nipping him at the finish line.
Pole sitter Josh Oakley finished third, followed by Doug Godsey of Richmond, Va., and Quackenbush. |
