SOUTH BOSTON, VA (May 10, 2025) – The chase for the South Boston Speedway’s Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division championship has suddenly gotten a lot closer.
Two-time NASCAR national champion and seven-time South Boston Speedway champion Peyton Sellers of Danville, Virginia swept the twin 75-lap Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division races that headlined Saturday night’s Viny’s Italian Restaurant & Italian Delight Family Restaurant Race Night at South Boston Speedway.
The sweep gives Sellers four wins in his six starts at the .4-mile oval this season and 62 career wins in NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Division races at South Boston Speedway.
“It was a very good night, for sure,” Sellers remarked. “I told the people in the stands I was more excited tonight after winning those two races because it’s hard to have a car that good. You don’t get inverted back to ninth and take the lead on lap seven very often. It’s pretty hard to do. A lot of holes have to open up, and a lot of things have to go your way.”
Sellers started the night trailing points leader Trevor Ward of Winston-Salem, North Carolina by eight points. Unofficially, Sellers closed the gap to two points as Ward finished fourth in the first 75-lap race and finished second to Sellers in the nightcap.
“We tried some stuff for the first race, and probably shouldn’t have messed with it,” Ward explained. “We wanted to try to get better and obviously went the wrong way. We put everything back as close as we could with a couple of minor changes for the second race and had a lot better results. I didn’t feel like we had the tire under us at that point because we used up so much in the first race. We’ll learn, regroup, and get better for the next one.”
Sellers started on the pole in the first 75-lap race, lost the lead, but sped past Blake Stallings of Danville, Virginia on the fourth lap to take the lead. With no caution flags to slow the race, Sellers sped to a .939-second win over Jacob Borst of Elon, North Carolina, who started fourth and raced his way to a runner-up finish. Landon Pembelton of Amelia, Virginia finished third with Ward and Stallings rounding out the top five finishers.
There were three lead changes among four drivers in the second 75-lap race, all occurring in the first seven laps. Sellers, who had to start ninth as the result of an inverted start among the top finishers of the first race, wasted no time in getting to the front, taking the lead from Ward on the seventh lap.
The race’s second caution flag on the 25th lap tightened up the field for the restart, but Sellers pulled away quickly and sped to a 1.569-second win over Ward in the 50-lap green-flag dash to the finish.
Mike Looney of Catawba, Virginia finished third with Pembelton and Borst completing the top five finishers.
Toby Layne, Kyle Dudley and Ward each led briefly in the early going, with Sellers leading the final 69 laps of the race.
Teenager Tristan Brunelli Captures Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division Win
Fourteen-year-old Tristan Brunelli of Powhatan, Virginia earned his first career stock car racing win Saturday night, driving to victory in the 50-lap Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division race that was part of Saturday night’s Viny’s Italian Restaurant & Italian Delight Family Restaurant Race Night at South Boston Speedway.
“It’s very exciting to win your first career race in the Limited Sportsman Division at South Boston Speedway with this tight of a field,” he said with a huge smile.
“It’s very hard to win one of these races, and when you do it, it feels really good. This means a lot.”
Early in the race it appeared that another 14-year-old racer, Lane Woods of Moneta, Virginia was on his way to the win. Woods was leading the race on the 25th lap when a couple of slower cars spun coming off of the second turn. Woods was unable to avoid the mishap and was sidelined.
“I was pretty surprised,” Brunelli said of the mishap that sidelined Woods. “The lapped cars were letting us by pretty well. When they (his team) said Lane spun in turn two and some lapped cars had wrecked I was like, ‘okay, this is what we need to be up front,’ and we went on from there.”
The 25th lap mishap put Zach Peregoy of Clarksville, Virginia in front for the restart with Brunelli in second place. Peregoy fended off Brunelli for nine laps before Brunelli wrestled the lead away from him. At the end, Brunelli crossed the finish line .421-second ahead of Peregoy to take the win.
Nathan Crews of Long Island, Virginia, finished third, with Cory Dunn of Salem, Virginia and Drew Dawson of Nathalie, Virginia completed the top five finishers.
Dillon Davis Wins 25-Lap Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division Race
Dillon Davis of Nathalie, Virginia edged B.J. Reaves of South Boston, Virginia by a narrow .144-second margin to win the 25-lap Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division race Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.
The win was Davis’ first victory of the season.
The race was an exciting one as Davis and former division champion Scott Phillips of Halifax, Virginia battled for the lead in the early stages of the race. Davis led the first six laps before Phillips rallied to get by him on the seventh lap. Phillips led four laps before Davis regained the lead on the 11th lap.
A costly slip on the 12th lap resulted in Phillips dropping back to fifth place, with Reaves capitalizing and quickly taking second place. Reaves kept the pressure on Davis the rest of the race, with Davis hanging on for the win.
Jarrett Milam of Keeling, Virginia, Colby Pool of South Boston, Virginia and Phillips rounded out the top five finishers.
Landon Milam Is Winner Of The 20-Lap Dollar General Hornets Division Race
Landon Milam of Keeling, Virginia took the lead from pole winner Dustin Davis of Nathalie, Virginia on the second lap and drove to victory in the 20-lap Dollar General Hornets Division race Saturday night at South Boston Speedway. The win was his first in the division this season.
Milam crossed the finish line .499-second ahead of Jason DeCarlo of Chase City, Virginia, with Cameron Moss of Danville, Virginia finishing third, Davis taking the fourth spot, and Kendall Milam of Keeling, Virginia rounding out the top five finishers.
Lockhart Takes Modified Win, Floars Takes Sportsman Win in Southern Ground Pounders Race
Shayne Lockhart of Richmond, Virginia took the overall race win and the Modified Division win and Kevin Floars of Clayton, North Carolina took the win Sportsman Division win in Saturday night’s 35-lap race for the Southern Ground Pounders Vintage Racing Club at South Boston Speedway.
The win was the third Modified Division win of the season for Lockhart. Floars, who finished fourth overall in Saturday night’s race, has now won four races in the Sportsman Division this season.
Steve Mendenhall of Clayton, North Carolina finished second overall and Dennis Werner of Southport, North Carolina finished third overall.
