SOUTH BOSTON, VA (August 27, 2025) – The frustration and pressure of almost two seasons of chasing a victory in South Boston Speedway’s highly competitive Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division has ended for Cory Dunn.
The Salem, Virginia resident earned his first career South Boston Speedway win in the 50-lap Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division race on August 23 in the next-to-last points race of the 2025 season at the .4-mile oval.
“It’s been a battle,” Dunn remarked, “it’s been a fight. I can’t thank my guys enough for keeping their heads down and their noses to the grindstone. We finally conquered it.”
Dunn, a two-time Limited Sportsman Division champion and 2022 Late Model Stock Car Division Rookie of the Year at the currently shuttered Motor Mile Speedway at Radford, Virginia, won in his 19th career start in South Boston Speedway’s Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division. With the win, Dunn became the 41st different driver to win in the division since the start of the 2003 season.
“To finally be able to come out on top at South Boston is pretty special,” Dunn said. “It means a lot. The competition here at South Boston Speedway is stout. We had a 19-car field and the top eight or nine cars in qualifying were less than a tenth of a second apart. To be able to come out on top with a field that is that stout is pretty special. I’m glad we were finally able to seal the deal.”
The win takes a lot of pressure off of Dunn’s shoulders.
“It’s been tough,” Dunn noted. “We’ve left the track scratching our heads about what else do we need to do to be able to find ourselves in Victory Lane, run a little better and so forth. There were days when we came here to South Boston on Friday to test, felt like we were really good when we left, and came back the next day for the race and it was like a totally different racecar. The only thing we did was push it up into the trailer and unload it the next day with no changes.”
The August 23 event was different.
“We clicked on it this race pretty well,” Dunn pointed out. “We had a really good car in testing on Friday as well. We made a few changes that made the car even better and it showed up in the race, which is all I can ask for as a driver. My guys kept their heads down, figured out a plan, and executed it.”
Dunn, who has 11 Top-5 finishes and 16 Top-10 finishes in his 19 career starts at South Boston Speedway, admitted it has taken him longer to achieve a victory at South Boston Speedway than he anticipated when he started competing at the track at the start of the 2024 season.

“We’ve been runner-up several times and have had some really good finishes,” Dunn pointed out. “We just could never find that last little bit that we needed to get into Victory Lane.”
He pointed out that an adjustment period follows when leaving your home track to race at a different venue.
“Going to new tracks is always going to be tough because the guys that race there all the time are going to have an advantage over you,” Dunn explained. “They know more about the track and things like that.”
With the closure of Motor Mile Speedway Dunn has made South Boston Speedway his home track.
“Everybody at South Boston Speedway has made this my second home track,” Dunn remarked. “Coming here to South Boston Speedway is easy as far as the racing is concerned. There are a lot of good guys to compete with in this division, and a lot of great racing.”
