SOUTH BOSTON, VA (August 14, 2024) – The spotlight will shine on South Boston Speedway’s Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division Saturday night, August 17 when South Boston Speedway hosts the richest Limited Sportsman Division race in its history, the Kenny Meadows Limited Sportsman Memorial Feature Race as part of the Sentara Health Race Night partnering with God’s Pit Crew event.
A $3,000 prize will go to the winner of the 50-lap race that honors the late Kenny Meadows who passed away December 7, 2021 at age 56 due to COVID-19. Meadows was a life-long racing enthusiast. He was crew chief for his son, Calvin Meadows,’ racing efforts and helped many other teams throughout the years as well. Kenny Meadows was involved in racing for 14 years.
“We were just completely overwhelmed to get this opportunity to have this race at South Boston Speedway,” said his widow, Debra Meadows. “My husband’s passion was racing, and this race means the world to our family.”
In addition to the $3,000 winner’s prize there will be a $250 Roof Masters Pole Award, and a $250 Aqua Pros Hard Charger Award. Additional special bonus awards have been posted by the Meadows Family, Helical Precision Inc., LS Tractor and 3DR.
Purse sponsors include Skynet Technologies, Sellers Racing, Mincey’s Graphics, Anderson Outdoor Solutions, Billy’s A/C Service, W.G. Meadows was surprised to learn how quickly prizes and awards had grown.
“It blew my mind when Brandon (South Boston Speedway General Manager Brandon Brown) gave me that figure because I was not expecting it to be that much,” she said. “That puts the icing on the cake so-to-speak because that shows how many people did cared for Kenny. He was the type of person that his heart was as big around as the moon and he was always there to help other people.
“I thank every person that is involved in this,” she added. “I cannot begin to thank them enough and I thank every sponsor that has come on board for this race because it truly means the world to me and the family.”
Not only is the 50-lap Kenny Meadows Limited Sportsman Memorial Feature Race for the Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division big money-wise, it is a critical race in the chase for the 2024 South Boston Speedway Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division championship.
With only one more points race remaining after this event, defending division champion Jason Myers of Hurt, Virginia leads Eric Winslow of Pelham, North Carolina by a slim four-point margin. Nathan Crews of Long Island, Virginia is in third place in the standings only 18 points down to Myers. Drew Dawson of Nathalie, Virginia sits in fourth place 26 points out of the lead and Cory Dunn of Salem, Virginia stands fifth, 29 points down to Myers.
Twin 75-lap races for the Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division are also part of the Sentara Health Race Night partnering with God’s Pit Crew event. Two-time NASCAR national champion Peyton Sellers of Danville, Virginia leads fellow Danville, Virginia resident Blake Stallings by 28 points entering Saturday night’s twinbill. Mike Looney of Catawba, Virginia is in third place 36 points behind Sellers. Stacy Puryear of South Boston, Virginia occupies fourth place and is 56 points behind Sellers. Jacob Borst of Elon, North Carolina is in fifth place, 71 points behind Sellers.
Fans will also see a 25-lap race for the Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division, a 20-lap race for the Virginia State Police HEAT Hornets Division and a 25-lap race for the Southern Ground Pounders Vintage Racing Club.
A memorial for the late Roy Hendrick of Amelia, Virginia, South Boston Speedway’s first NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Division champion and the winner of the first-ever NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Division race at South Boston Speedway, will be held during Saturday’s pre-race ceremonies. Hendrick passed away August 3 at the age of 70.
The famous Flyin’ 11Late Model Stock Car that Hendrick drove to numerous wins at South Boston Speedway and other tracks in the region will be at the speedway for the event.
Advance tickets for the Sentara Health Race Night partnering with God’s Pit Crew event are priced at $12 each. Advance tickets may be purchased online on South Boston Speedway’s website, www.southbostonspeedway.com or by calling the speedway office at 434-572-4947 or toll free at 1-877-440-1540 during regular business hours.
Tickets at the gate on race day will be $15 each. Seniors ages 65 and older, military, healthcare workers, and students (with ID) can purchase tickets for $12 each at the gate on race day.
Advance tickets purchased for the Davenport Energy Race Night event that was rained out on August 3 will be honored on Saturday night, August 17 for the Sentara Health Race Night partnering with God’s Pit Crew event.
Saturday’s event schedule for the Sentara Health Race Night partnering with God’s Pit Crew event has registration and pit gates opening at 2 p.m. Practice will begin at 3:20 p.m. and run until 5:05 p.m. Frontstretch spectator gates will open at 3:30 p.m. and backstretch and trackside parking gates will open at 5:30 p.m. Qualifying is set for 6 p.m., pre-race ceremonies are slated for 6:45 p.m. and the first race of the night will get the green flag at 7 p.m.
